Spent the whole of yesterday reading the novel known as "Empress Wu". The story depicts the life of the first empress of China. Having little if not no knowledge about China history, I was unable to tell if the story is merely fictitious or is true. Notwithstanding, it was still a captivating story.
Alot of characters and personalities can change when driven by circumstances. Empress Wu used to be a naive and idealistic person when she first joined the palace as a concubine. Driven by destiny, politics and the need to survive, she hardened and began to think for herself. She learnt to mask her true feelings and resort to treachery in order to avoid death. Gradually, historians came to view her as a ruthless leader. However, reading into her intentions, she did not mean to be ruthless, it was just a matter of surviving, which in some instances you need to step on or sacrifice others to do so.
Looking at what is happening in today's world, it can be quite reflective as well. No one chooses to be ruthless when they first started. The antagonists in life could also be driven by circumstances and their behaviours were just mere reflection of their survival instincts? This is really worth thinking. Maybe with this understanding, we can then forgive those people who have subject us to their treachery in their attempts to survive? Hmmm.....
