I came across an interesting report in Today about sleeping patterns. Contrary to popular belief, a person's sleeping pattern is not soley determined by habit and discipline but it could be genetically encoded. Hence, it may be next to impossible to change sleeping patterns. This means that if you are a 'morning' person, it is tough switching to a 'night' person and vice versa. We can only attempt to delay sleep by exposing ourselves to bright lights or exercising before sleeping time.
I must stress that this is NOT an excuse that I have cooked up to justify my sleeping hours but rather it is a scientifically proven fact. Strangely, there seem to be more people being genetically coded as a 'night' person than a 'morning' person...
