Reading Paulo Coelho's books required alot of mulling and thinking. If you read his books solely to get a story, I personally feel that you only getting half of the value of the book. The other half lies in getting some enlightenment over life and philosophy. Some of these morales are not straight in your face, but rather hidden behind the lines. Hence, a thin book can take twice the time to complete. This is also the most enjoyable part of the book.
I like picking out the more meaningful statements that he has included in some paras. These quotes often spring out from the most unexpected twist in the story. Here are some of the quotes that I most relate to from The Fifth Mountain.
Fear exists until the unavoidable happens.
Every human being at some time had some tragedy enter his life. At that moment, God challenged one to confront Him. There would be man who resign himself or man who sought a meaning to existence, feeling that God had been unjust, would challenge his own destiny.
Cowards desire the changed situation to quickly return to what it was before, so that can go on living their own lives and thinking in their customary way. The brave, however, set afire that which was old and, and even at the cost of great internal suffering, abandon everything, including God, and continue onward.

A child can always teach an adult 3 things: to be happy for no reason, to always be busy with something, and to know how to demand with all might which he desires.
